Positive Behaviour Support

Understanding behaviour, building skills and improving quality of life, with respect, dignity and your goals at the centre.

What is positive behaviour support?

Positive behaviour support (PBS) is an evidence-informed approach for people whose behaviours of concern affect their quality of life, relationships or safety. Instead of focusing only on stopping a behaviour, PBS works to understand why it happens and what the person needs. Then it builds skills and adjusts environments and supports, so behaviours of concern, and the need for restrictive practices, reduce over time.

Lofty Care Services is a registered NDIS provider approved for specialist behaviour support.

Frequently asked questions

Who can write an NDIS behaviour support plan?

Behaviour support plans for NDIS participants must be developed by an NDIS behaviour support practitioner whom the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission considers suitable. The plan is developed with the participant and the people who support them.

Is behaviour support funded by the NDIS?

Yes, when it's included in your plan. Specialist behaviour support is usually funded from the Capacity Building – Improved Relationships budget. Your support coordinator can help you check your plan.

What are restrictive practices?

Restrictive practices are interventions that restrict a person's rights or freedom of movement, such as seclusion or chemical, mechanical, physical or environmental restraint. In the NDIS they must be part of a behaviour support plan, authorised where required, reported, and reduced over time.

Can you support someone in SIL with behaviours of concern?

Yes. We provide behaviour support alongside our SIL and community supports, so strategies are used consistently at home and in the community.

How do I get started?

Call us on 0431 714 119 or send an enquiry. Support coordinators and other professionals can also make a referral through our referral form.
